Enhancing taste through colour and design.
During Dutch Design Week 2024, HAK Studio introduced UMA Tableware. The collection focuses on enhancing taste perception through colours, textures and materials. Inspired by neurological research, these pieces cater to older adults, those with appetite disorders, and individuals who have lost their sense of taste after COVID-19.
Applying principles from gastrophysics, HAK Studio developed two plates designed to visually and haptically enhance sweetness and saltiness.
The Sweet plate, crafted from porcelain and glazed with pure quartz, features swirl-shaped undulations and glaze, intentionally chosen to evoke associations with candy.

The Salty bowl, also made of porcelain, has a rough and dry, handcrafted texture on the outside and a glazed quartz interior. Its course finish mimics salt crystals, enhancing the perception of salty flavours.

With further development underway, HAK Studio is expanding the collection to intensify umami and sour flavours, showcasing the power of colour and texture in shaping taste.
