Mustard is enjoying a moment. Excuse the mixed condiment metaphor, but for a long while it has been a bit of a Marmite colour, banished to colour Siberia for several decades as we recovered from its 70’s heyday. It has however in recent seasons become a fashion and now an interiors favourite.

It is a clear antithesis to the domination of cool grey interiors and an easy introduction to a warmer scheme.  Less challenging than orange, more sophisticated than yellow, and with a heritage quality that suggests classic rather than trend fad.

It plays beautifully with emerging dark woods and the shift toward brass tones in metal finishes. In velvets and deep pile carpets layered up with tobacco brown there’s a sense of 70s luxe, while in handcrafted ceramics or linen bedding as new accent to charcoal darks the spirit of Hygge is given a new lease of life.
